Guyana reiterates support for the self-determination of Saharawi people and complete eradication of colonialism from our world

New York (United Nations) 23 October 2020 (SPS)- The Permanent Representative of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana to the United Nations, Her Excellency Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, asseted her country’s support to the right of Saharawi people to self-determination and for complete eradication of colonialism from our world, in her country’s statement before the 75th Ordinary Session of the UN General Assembly Fourth Committee Thursday.

“Guyana reiterates its unwavering support for the principle of self-determination of people and for the acceleration of efforts to completely eradicate every trace of colonialism from our world,” she stressed, underscoring “that the wellbeing of the Saharawi people should be among the primary motivating factors for the achievement of a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution that would provide for their self-determination.”

Guyana also affirms “its support for the resolutions adopted by the Security Council and the General Assembly on the question of Western Sahara. We urge all parties to respect and uphold the provisions of these resolutions and note that a solution to this longstanding dispute would contribute to stability and security in the Sahel region.”

She further called on the parties to “continue to engage in the process in a serious and respectful manner,” hoping that they “would capitalize on the momentum created by these meetings and continue working to build trust which is necessary for progressive dialogue. Further, we look forward to the appointment of a new Personal Envoy of the Secretary General on this issue,” she concluded. (SPS)
