Establishment of international human rights network for release of political prisoners worldwide

Paris, 13 April  2020 (SPS) -  The Sahrawi National Committee for Human Rights, along with several international organizations, have launched an international campaign for the liberation of political prisoners, so that the pandemic does not become a death penalty for thousands of people imprisoned and detained for political reasons, according to the Chairperson of the Sahrawi Committee.

The organizations believe that the continued presence of political prisoners inside prisons in the light of the aggravation of the health crisis that the world is experiencing because of the Coronavirus pandemic is the result of the absence of democracy and selfishness that dominates international politics by focusing on economic interests and profit, even at the expense of human rights.

The international campaign includes groups of human rights bodies and organizations in Africa, Latin America, Europe and the Middle East, aiming at mobilizing sufficient support to pressure governments to immediately release prisoners to avoid humanitarian disasters due to the terrible spread of the Coronavirus pandemic and the high rate of infections and deaths in various countries.
