Italy: establishment of a parliamentary group for friendship and solidarity with Saharawi people

Rome, Italy, July 17, 2018 (SPS) - The Parliamentary Group of Friendship and Solidarity with the Saharawi People was established Tuesday at the Italian Parliament, in the presence of the representative of the Frente POLISARIO in Italy, Mih Omar and the Ambassador of South Africa to Italy.

The parliamentary group includes a large number of Italian parliamentarians from different political formations consists of the two chambers of deputies and the Italian Senate.

The Italian Parliamentary Group for Friendship and Solidarity with the Saharawi People aims to undertake initiatives and studies to reach a just and lasting solution to the Saharawi issue and to introduce it within Italy, "according to the founding statement following the announcement of the establishment.

According to its statement "One of the group's priorities is to take initiatives to accelerate direct negotiations between the parties to the conflict Morocco and the Frente POLISARIO, under the auspices of the United Nations, with a view to reaching a solution that respects the resolutions of the United Nations and international covenants, Self-determination ".

Besides,  the demand of the Italian leaders and the Italian governmental and parliamentary institutions for Italy to play a leading and significant role through its distinguished and balanced relations with the parties to the conflict and with the countries of the European Union and to activate their influence in order to contribute to accelerating the achievement of a just and lasting solution to the Sahrawi people's cause. .

The statement referred to the Group's intention to undertake initiatives and a policy of lasting humanitarian cooperation that would alleviate the suffering of Saharawi refugees in Saharawi refugee camps.

Ambassador of South Africa, expressed his country's support for the struggle of the Saharawi people for freedom and independence, praising this step which, he said, would contribute to the pressure to reach a just and lasting solution to the conflict in Western Sahara which respects the right to self-determination as well as the alleviation of suffering of the Saharawi people with political and humanitarian support.
