Algiers, May 10, 2018 (SPS) - China on Wednesday has donated DZD10 million to the Sahrawi Red Crescent to provide the necessary food aid for Sahrawi refugees in the camps of Tindouf (around 2000-km southwest of Algiers).
"The Chinese Embassy in Algeria has donated DZD10 million to the Sahrawi Red Crescent. This donation will be used to provide food aid for Sahrawi refugees in Algeria, especially women, children and the elderly," said the Chinese Ambassador to Algeria, Yang Guangyu, during a ceremony devoted to that end at the headquarters of the Algerian Red Crescent (CRA) in Algiers.
Guangyu said that the Chinese Embassy in Algeria "has decided to make this donation on the eve of the holy month of fasting Ramadan, with the hope to alleviate the suffering of some women, children and the elderly."
In this regard, he recalled "Sahrawi refugees have been living, for over 40 years, in difficult conditions in camps and some of them, especially women and children, are in highly vulnerable conditions."
He added that through this donation, China is sending a message of sympathy to the Sahrawi refugees in Algeria, and expresses its "high respect" to Algerian authorities for the efforts and sacrifices made by hosting refugees on the Algerian territory.
For her part, CRA's President Saida Benhabyles expressed solidarity with Sahrawi refugees, adding that this Chinese donation, which coincides with the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, will bring "happiness and hope to Sahrawi refugees."SPS
