Strasburg, April 23, 2016 (SPS) -The members of European Parliament has urged has urged the ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to the United Nationes, H.E. Oyarzun Marchesi Ramon, the renewal of the mandate of the peace-keeping mission to Western Sahara in letter sent, a copy of which obtained by SPS.
¨We, as Members of European Parliament, are writing to urge a renewal of the mandate of the peace-keeping mission to Western Sahara¨ EU MPs said
Recalling that this year marks the 25th anniversary of the ceasefire arrangements and settlement plan between the Frente Polisario and the Kingdom, which should let to the exercise of the right to self-determination by the Sahrawi people through the establishment of a UN peace-keeping mission, MINURSO however, a quarter of century has passed without the UN delivering on its promise.
The members conveyed their support to UNSG’s efforts and his Personal Envoy to resolve the conflict in Western Sahara. It is with great astonishment that we have witnessed the Moroccan government’s deplorable reaction to the UNSG’s visit to the conflict region.

“The decision to expel MINURSO staff and close down a military liaison office inside the territory is deeply alarming; not only does it set a dangerous precedent in the way States are to treat UN missions: it is a severe blow to the ceasefire arrangements and as such threatens the stability of the Maghreb region”. EUMPs added in their letter
They denounced the Moroccan exploitation of natural resources in the territory of Western Sahara for its own benefit. Which constitute blatant disrespect for the UN Legal Opinion on the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources in Western Sahara. SPS
