Brussels, April 23, 2016 (SPS) – Chairman of Belgian Committee of Support for Sahrawi People Pierre Galand and President of French Association of Friends of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (AARASD) Regine Villemont urged the UN Security Council to support the appeal of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to exercise of Sahrawi people's right self-determination.
In an open letter to ambassador LIU Jieyi, chairperson of the UN Security Council, Pierre Galand and Regine Villemont sent "an emergency call so the UN Security Council strongly supports Ban Ki-Moon appeal for the exercise of self-determination right by the Sahrawi people."
In this letter on behalf of the Conference organized last Tuesday in Paris under the theme of "Settlement of conflict, an issue of international law. Besides the UN, what role for Europe", Pierre Galand and Regine Villemont said that the Sahrawi people "should be able to decide about their future, through a free referendum."
In this regard, they underlined that the "Council must set a calendar for the negotiated holding of the referendum promised to Western Sahara population, 25 years ago."SPS
