Sweden supports UN efforts for solution to Western Sahara conflict (Swedish Foreign Minister)

Stockholm, March 25, 2016 (SPS) Sweden supports the decisions of the Security Council and the renewed efforts under the UN Secretary General and his Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Christopher Ross, to find a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution that respects the rights of Sahrawis to self-determination.

Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Margot Wallström, who responded to questions by Member of Parliament for the left party, Ms. Lotta Johnsson Fornarve, about the Swedish policy on Western Sahara, indicated that "Sweden is giving priority to work for human rights in our contacts with Morocco and the Polisario Front and also within the EU".

The Minister recalled that the United Nations mission for the referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) has no human rights component. "An initiative to extend the mandate in this direction as recently as 2013 by the United States, but it was not supported by the Security Council. "

She stressed that "a heavy responsibility weighs on the parties to the conflict to participate in a negotiated solution".

"But it is not enough to support the Security Council. Sweden must also formulate clear demands and act actively in the United Nations to reach a solution where the demand for the imminent holding of a referendum has a central place. It is also high time that the United Nations and Sweden clearly urge Morocco, which is the part that has systematically obstructs and sabotaged the work of the United Nations. ", she concluded. (SPS)
