Western Sahara remains a "Non-Self-Governing Territories"

Brussels, May 10, 2017 (SPS) – Western Sahara status remains that of a "non-self-governing territories," said EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini, reiterating the EU support to the efforts of the UN Secretary-General in order to reach a solution that will allow "the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara."
 

Fourth ordinary session of the Pan-African Parliament begins in Midrand

Midrand (South Africa), 09 May 2017 (SPS) - The fourth ordinary session of the Pan-African Parliament began in South Africa on Monday to analyze and address the issues of greatest concern to the peoples of the continent.
The session, attended by 54 states of the continent, had as guests of honor the presidents of Malawi, S.E. Prof. Arthur P. Mutharika, and Burkina Faso, S.E. Roch Mark Christian Kabore.

POLISARIO Front takes part at Norwegian Trade Unions Confederation 34th Congress

Oslo, Norway, 09 May 2017 (SPS) - the representative of the Frente POLISARIO in Norway, Dr. Limam Khalil, has attended the 34th Congress of the Norwegian Trade Union Confederation (NFTU), which started on Monday in Oslo.
 
Delegates representing more than 35 countries, as well as many international trade union organizations, will attend the conference. The conference is expected to endorse the position of the Confederation of Norwegian Trade Unions on a number of international issues, including the issue of decolonization in Western Sahara.

President of Republic receives Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister

Shaheed El-Hafed (Refugee Camps), 8 May 2017 (SPS) - President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, received Monday afternoon Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Marcelino Medina Gonzalez, at end of his visit to Saharawi Republic.
After the meeting, Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister reiterated his country's position in support of the Sahrawi people's struggle and their right to self-determination and independence.

Sahrawi political prisoners of Gdeim Izik appear before Salé court

Rabat (Morocco) 8 May 2017 (SPS) - The first session of the trial of Sahrawi political prisoners, Gdeim Izik, opened Monday, at the Moroccan Court of appeal in Salé, within the framework of the fourth round of their trial.
Since the early hours of Monday morning, the Moroccan authorities have brought dozens of thugs who have intimidated the families of the prisoners and their supporters in an attempt to disrupt their peaceful and civilized demands.

Sahrawi human rights activist Aminatou Haidar participates in honor ceremony in memory of Miguel Portas

Lisbon (Portugal), 8 May 2017 (SPS) - Sahrawi human rights activist Aminatou Haidar took part in the honor ceremony dedicated to the memory of Portuguese left-wing fighter Miguel Portas, on its fifth anniversary held Saturday in Lisbon, according to a Saharawi diplomatic source.
On this occasion, the Sahrawi activist made press briefings with Portuguese media, received by the vice-president of the Portuguese Parliament and met with most European parliamentary groups and eminent personalities of the Portuguese civil society participating in this event.

Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister reaffirms Cuba's strong position in support of Saharawi issue

Shaheed El-Hafed (Refugee Camps), May 7, 2017 (SPS) - The First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Marcelino Medina González, reaffirmed Sunday the strong position of his country in support of the struggle of the Saharawi people and their right to self-determination and independence.
Mr. González told the national media after meeting with the Saharawi Foreign Minister, Mohamed-Salem Ould-Salek that his presence in the SADR representing the Cuban government is a confirmation of the strong bilateral relations between the two countries.

Sahrawi Republic condemns terrorist attack in Lake Chad region

Bir Lehlu, May 7, 2017 (SPS) The President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario front, Brahim Ghali, condemned Saturday "forcefully" the terrorist attack perpetrated Friday against a position of the Chadian army based in Kaïga-Kindiria, in the Lake Chad region.
"We condemn with the utmost firmness yesterday’s terrorist attack against a position of the Chadian army in Kaïga, in the region of Lake Chad," wrote the President of the Republic in a letter addressed to his Chadian counterpart Idriss Deby.

Moroccan forces assault Sahrawi activist on hunger strike

El Aaiun (Occupied Territories) May 7, 2017 (SPS) - Moroccan forces intervened violently on Saturday morning against Saharawi political activist on hunger strike Sidi-Mohamed Alouat, in front of his house in the so-called Inaash neighborhood in the occupied city of El Aaiun.
Sidi-Mohamed Alawat had entered, the day before, into an open hunger strike demanding the retrieval of his social rights after he was arbitrarily expelled from his job in retaliation for his political positions towards the Saharawi people.

Cuban First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs to visit SADR

Shaheed El-Hafed (Refugee Camps), May 6, 2017 (SPS) - Cuban First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcelino Medina Gonzalez will Sunday undertake an official visit to the Sahrawi Republic, according to sources of the Cuba Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister will begin his visit in the Saharawi Refugee Camps on Sunday and Monday,  where he meets with the Saharawi authorities, including the President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali.

The Saharawi people and their representative organizations, including the democratically elected SADR government, have long protested the illegal mining and export of high quality phosphate rock from an area of Western Sahara which has been under armed occupation by Morocco since 1975.  The trade has continued despite the commitment of the United Nations in 1991 to ensure for the people of Western Sahara a self-determination process, something otherwise achieved throughout Africa.

EU welcomes extension of Minurso mandate, reiterates support to UN efforts

Brussels, may 5, 2017 (SPS) -The European Union (EU) hailed Wednesday in Brussels the adoption of a UN Resolution extending the mandate of the United Nations Mission for Referendum in Western Sahara (Minurso), and reiterated support to the efforts of the Secretary General of the Organization to reach a fair solution that ensures self-determination of the Sahrawi people. 
“The European Union welcomed the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of a resolution on the renewal of the Minurso mandate until 30 April 2018,” said an EU spokesperson.

Algiers, May 1, 2017 (SPS) -Sahrawi coordinator with the United Nations Mission for Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) M'hamed Khedad affirmed Monday that the adoption by the Security Council of a resolution extending the mandate of the Minurso and calling for negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front without prior conditions, is was a "great victory" for the Sahrawi cause, and put back political process ensuring the right of Sahrawi people to self-determination.

Algiers, May 1, 2017 (SPS) - The Sahrawi ambassador to Algiers Bouchraya Hamoudi Bayoune affirmed Sunday that the adoption by UN Security Council of a resolution on the extension of the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) and the obligation to begin negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front without prerequisites, confirm the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, adding that this is a response to “all the Moroccan plots against the legitimate Sahrawi cause.”

AU Commission hails adoption of UN Security Council’s resolution 2351 on Western Sahara

Addis Ababa (Ethiopia)May 1, 2017 (SPS) - The president of the African Union Commission (AU) Moussa Faki Mahamat hailed the unanimous adoption, last Friday, by the members of the United Nations Security Council, of the resolution 2351 (2017) on the Western Sahara issue which extended, for a year, the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).
