Germany's position on Western Sahara compatible with international law (German diplomat)

Berlin, 31 July 2015 (SPS) - The Minister of State for Europe in the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Michael Roth, has confirmed that Germany's position on Western Sahara is fully compatible with international law, in response to a letter from Norbert Neuser, German SPD, MEP, Chairman of the Western Sahara Intergroup in the European Parliament and member of the board of the Association of Friends of Sahrawi People in Germany.

 

"The position of the Federal Government on the Western Sahara is fully compatible with international law, we endeavor for a political solution that permits the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara in the context of law and consistent with the principles and resolutions of the United Nations Charter,” confirmed the Minister in a letter on June 10, 2015, adding that “the Federal Government will adopt this position in all contacts with the government of Morocco.”

 

He also confirmed that Germany supports extending the current mandate of MINURSO (the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) to include monitoring of the situation of human rights. (SPS)
