New York (United Nations), 26 October 2021 (SPS) - Algeria, as a neighbouring and observer country in the settlement process of Western Sahara issue, reiterated its support to the efforts of the new UN chief's personal envoy for the occupied territory, Staffan de Mistura, aiming at putting an end to the conflict, said Algeria's permanent representative to the United Nations, Sofiane Mimouni.
"Algeria will continue, as it has always done in the past, to contribute to a just and lasting settlement of Western Sahara conflict," Mimouni said in New York, at the general debate of the UN Fourth Committee on Special Political Issues and Decolonization.
"Algeria will therefore spare no effort to support the new personal envoy's actions to put an end to this protracted conflict, which can only be achieved through the realization of Western Sahara people's aspiration to freely exercise their right to self-determination."
"My country joins the call of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his latest report on Western Sahara, urging members of the Security Council, friends of Western Sahara and other parties involved to encourage Morocco and the Polisario Front to seize the opportunity and continue to participate in good faith and without preconditions to the political process," Mimouni said.
Algeria "sincerely hopes that the UN Secretary-General's call will be heard and that both parties to the conflict will show political wisdom and responsibility and engage in negotiations on a solid basis," in order to achieve a just and lasting political settlement to Western Sahara conflict.
