34th AU Summit: Double victory for SADR, dismal failure for Morocco

Bir Lehlu (Sahrawi Republic)  Feb 10, 2021 (SPS) -- The 34th African Union Summit, held on February 6-7, was a double victory for the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), whose  territorial sovereignty was reaffirmed by the Pan-African organization, the Sahrawi ministry of Foreign Affairs said, adding that for Morocco, however, the continental event was a resounding failure as shown by its attempts to escape their commitments towards the AU.
"On the sovereignty issue, which is the cause of the war in Western Sahara, occupied by Morocco since 1975, the African Union rejected Morocco's move to transfer infrastructure projects to West Africa through the occupied territories, and emphasized the need for a commitment to respect the borders and territorial integrity of the member states," the Saharawi Foreign minister said.
"The AU has decided to submit the two projects to a subcommittee of the Permanent Representatives Committee to get the approval of the Saharawi government, the only body concerned by anything that directly or indirectly affects the SADR territory."
"Morocco’s defeat on this fundamental issue shows once again that the international community will never recognize its sovereignty over our country, no matter what it does," the ministry stressed.
In addition, the Saharawi ministry of Foreign Affairs underlined Morocco’s total failure to get the position of Commissioner within the African Union, after being the only member state to present five candidates who were all excluded, which has not happened to any other member since the creation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963.SPS
