Esquerda Unida Gallega expresses its support to Guerguerat protests

Submitted on

Vigo (Galicia), Nov 5, 2020 (SPS) - Esquerda Unida, faithful to its commitment to the struggle of the Saharawi people for their freedom and independence, has just approved a resolution in support of the civic protests that Sahrawi citizens have been carrying out in the last weeks in the Guerguerat pass, the land border of Western Sahara with Mauritania, illegally employed by Morocco.
This area is of great importance from the economic point of view, since Morocco takes advantage of the passage through this border to take thousands of products to the rest of Africa, including those looted in the Saharawi territories. In addition, closures and restrictions on other transport routes due to Covid-19 are causing an increase in traffic and the illegal use by Morocco of this illegal breach.
Coinciding with the 45th anniversary of the illegal “Madrid Tripartite Agreements”, IU points out that “it is time to denounce the abandonment of a people that has been waiting for 45 years for the International Community to act to end an illegal occupation that prevents them from living independently in its territory. "
The Galician political formation renews its support "its support for the protests and calls on all the public administrations of Galicia and the State as a whole to demand urgent compliance with the United Nations mandate through MINURSO to carry out the independence referendum in Western Sahara.
