Moscow, 2 November 2020 (SPS) - The Russian Federation has reiterated that a just, lasting settlement in Western Sahara can only be reached politically on the basis of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
In a statement on Monday, on the adoption on October 30, by the UN Security Council of Resolution 2548 on extending the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “we reaffirm the consistent position of the Russian Federation: a just, lasting settlement in Western Sahara can only be reached politically on the basis of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions,”
“We decided to abstain from voting on the US-drafted resolution. It preserves some provisions that undermine the unbiased and balanced approach of the UN Security Council to the self-determination of the Western Sahara people and dilute the fundamental principles of the Western Sahara settlement earlier approved by the Security Council,” the statement pointed out.
The Russian Federation called on the parties to the conflict, the Polisario Front and the Kingdom of Morocco, to abstain from unilateral actions, which could complicate the resumption of a political dialogue.
Finally, it expressed its readiness to continue its scrupulous work with the parties to the conflict, considering their legitimate concerns. (SPS)
