Nigeria reiterates support for inalienable right of Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence

New York (UN), 17 October 2020 (SPS) - Permanent Mission of the United Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Nation, DR. Ibrahim Modibbo Umar, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for the inalienable right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination and independence in line with General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV) of 1960.
He stressed the urgency for achieving a peaceful, just, and lasting solution to the issue of the last colony in Africa, that provides for the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination in conformity with relevant General Assembly resolutions.
He called on the Secretary-General to appoint a Personal Envoy for Western Sahara and to relaunch the peace process, urging the two parties, Morocco and the Frente POLISARIO, to resume direct negotiations.
He commended the important role the African Union is playing in the resolution of the question of Western Sahara and the UN-AU peace plan, including self-determination referendum for the people of Western Sahara. (SPS)
