Geneva, 4 July 2020 (SPS) - The Algerian delegation to the UN in Geneva on Thursday called on the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to resume its technical missions in Western Sahara.
"As regards the non-self-governing territory Western Sahara, we once again recall that no technical mission has been undertaken there since 2015," noted Mehdi Litim, charge d'affaires at the Algerian mission during an interactive debate with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, held as part of the 44th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC).
"We request OHCHR to resume these missions and establish a technical assistance and capacity-building program for Saharawi institutions," said the diplomat.
He invited the UN human rights chief to detail the progress made in this regard in her next annual report and during her oral update.
During this session of the HRC, the Geneva group for the protection and promotion of human rights in Western Sahara denounced the Moroccan repressive machine in the occupied territories. (SPS)
