Penal Court clarifies recent legal actions taken against some persons

Shaheed Al-Hafeed, June 21, 2019 (SPS) - The Penal Court on Thursday issued a statement with the aim of informing the national public opinion and clarifying the circumstances of the recent legal actions carried out against some persons.

STATEMENT
With a view to informing the national public opinion and to clarifying the circumstances of the recent legal actions taken against some persons, the Public Prosecutor issued the following statement:
In compliance with the provisions of the laws of the Republic in force, particularly the Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedures.
In accordance with the provisions of Articles 74, 99, 148, 149 and 149 bis of the Penal Code relating to the offences including defamation, libel, slander, offences against honour and reputation, sedition, etc.
Pursuant to the provisions of Articles 1, 2, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 18 and 20 of the Code of Criminal Procedures, which contain the functions and powers of the Criminal Investigation Police and those of the Public Prosecution in terms of initiating public proceedings.
In exercising its respective duties, the unit of Criminal Investigation Police of the National Gendarmerie arrested three suspects (M.A. B; F. M. B; and M. K. A) between 17 and 19 June 2019 to be investigated in relation to the acts attributed to them, with all the rights to which they are entitled under the law.
In accordance with the prerogatives granted to it under the aforementioned laws, the Criminal Investigation Police initiated the search and investigation procedures provided for by the law under the supervision of the competent Office of the Public Prosecutor pending the completion of the cases to be brought before a judge.
