Pakistan’s Zia Ur Rehman named new commander of Minurso

New York, February 23, 2019 (SPS) – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced in a statement the appointment of Major-General Zia Ur Rehman of Pakistan as the new Force Commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in the Sahara Western (Minurso).

The new commander of the Minurso, 50, succeeds Major General Xiaojun Wang, of China, whose term ended on February 17.

A former military observer on the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC), Zia Ur Rehman also has 30-year national and international military command experience and a variety of experience in personnel management.

From 2015 to 2016, he served as Senior National Representative at US Central Command Headquarters (Centcom), in Florida. Most recently, he was an infantry brigade commander from 2016 to 2017 and an infantry division from 2017. (SPS)
