United Nations (New York), August 09, 2018 (SPS) - The UN Personal  Envoy for Western Sahara, Horst Köhler is trying to reconvene the Frente POLISARIO and Morocco before the end of the current mandate of the United Nations Mission to the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), said diplomatic sources in New York.
Köhler, who appeared yesterday behind closed doors before the Security Council of the United Nations, has been working for a year with the aim of trying to resume negotiations between Morocco and the POLISARIO, blocked for several years.
After the meeting behind closed doors, the deputy ambassador of the United Kingdom to the UN, Jonathan Allen, whose country holds the presidency of the Security Council this month, said that "there is a lot of support in the Council for the approach and proposal of Kholer that tries to bring the parties together before the end of the year. "
According to several media sources citing diplomatic sources, the former German president intends to send invitations in September for the next meeting.
A few hours before the meeting POLISARIO reiterated, in a statement, its commitment to cooperate fully with the Special Envoy under the framework of the United Nations Political Process, and that "it is prepared and willing to participate" in the negotiation process called for by the Security Council.
POLISARIO called on the United Nations, particularly, the members of the Security Council to fulfill their responsibility in accordance with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and to fully respect the inalienable right of the Saharawi people to self-determination. and independence.
