Illegal exploitation of Sahrawi resources: Polisario Front deeply concerned by EU attitude

Submitted on

Bir Lahlou (Liberated Territories), July 22, 2018 (SPS) - The Polisario Front expressed its “deep concern” over the attitude of some countries of the European Union (EU) which are still receiving products from the occupied Sahrawi territories in flagrant violation of the humanitarian international law, said M’hamed Kheddad, head of the external relations of the Polisario Front’s national secretariat.
The Sahrawi official said in a letter sent to the German minister of Foreign Affairs that EU has become “a real obstacle to the peace efforts conducted by the United Nations” and “prolongs, through these decisions, the sufferings of the Sahrawi people and increases tensions as well as threats on security and stability in the region.”
In this letter, M’hamed Kheddad expressed the Polisario Front’s “deep concern” over the information according to which Germany will receive shortly a cargo of fish from the occupied territories of Western Sahara, and which will  be shipped Thursday to Berlin in a Dutch boat, le Bente, loaded with nearly 3000 tonnes of fish meal.
He added that the Polisario Front, the only and legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people, “firmly condemns this illegal exportation of the natural resources of the occupied territories of Western Sahara and which was carried out without consulting the Sahrawi people.”
The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) invalidated in 2016 and in 2018 EU-Morocco commercial and fishing agreements for including the occupied territories of Western Sahara as they didn’t respect the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination as stipulated by UN resolutions. (SPS)
