Tifariti (Liberated Territories), May 21, 2018 (SPS) - President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) and Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, reaffirmed Sunday in Tifariti that the Polisario Front was ready to engage in direct negotiations with Morocco in good faith and without preconditions, urging Morocco to ensure that "reason will prevail."
In his opening address at the official festivities marking the 45th anniversary of the outbreak of the Sahrawi armed struggle, the Sahrawi President said that "the Polisario Front, as the only and legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people, is ready to engage in direct negotiations with Morocco … in order to complete Western Sahara decolonization process and guarantee the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and independence."
The Chief of the Frente Polisario has highlighted the importance of applying the latest Security Council resolution on Western Sahara and the decision of the 30th African Union (AU) summit, calling on the Moroccan government "to ensure that reason will prevail and to show courageous political willingness to comply with the international law for a just and lasting peace in the Maghreb."
"The Sahrawi people are peaceful people who despise wars, extremism and terrorism, but at the same time they are attached to their legitimate rights as stated in the UN resolutions," said President Ghali.
"These rights will be regained whatever the sacrifices."
SADR president also condemned "the attempts of some European parties to circumvent the European Union (EU) decisions in order to sign a fisheries agreement with Morocco which includes the territorial waters of Western Sahara, in blatant violation of the judgment of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU)."
In this regard, he reiterated the Polisario Front's readiness to engage in a serious and responsible dialogue with the European Commission, in accordance with the international law, international humanitarian law and European law.
Speaking about the festivities of the 45th anniversary of the armed struggle outbreak, President Ghali said that "this day represents a crucial date in Sahrawi people’s history, who decided to end the dark occupation through a great revolution to regain freedom and independence."
In front of remarkable audience made up international diplomats, the Sahrawi president broached the stages of the Sahrawi people struggle.
Besides, Ghali praised the distinguished audience made up of representatives of countries, governments, parliaments, parties, organizations and associations, who carried messages of solidarity of brotherhood, love and peace.
He notably paid special tribute to Algeria, under the leadership of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, which has consistently and clearly supported the just struggle of the Sahrawi people." (SPS)
