New York, Sep 18, 2017 (SPS) - United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres welcomed Sunday the intention of his personal envoy for Western Sahara Horst Kohler to visit, shortly, the region to relaunch the peace process, frozen since 2012.
“The secretary general welcomed his personal envoy’s intention to visit the region. He underlined the importance of the visit to relaunch the political process in a new spirit and new momentum, in accordance with the resolution 2351 (2017) of the Security Council,” said UN in a note sent to press correspondents. Adding that Kohler “awaits with interest to visit the region and work with the parties in a spirit of trust and compromise.”
Horst Kohler took up his post on 8 September in New York where he held several meetings and consultations to relaunch the negotiations between the Polisario Front and Morocco, said UN in its statement.
In this regard, UN emissary Antonio Guterres met with UN’s top officials as well as African Union’s peace and security commissioner, said the source.
Horst Kohler held talks with the representatives of the two sides in conflict and those of neighbouring countries and member States.
These meetings continued until September 16, according to the source. (SPS)
