Fourth Committee: Trinidad and Tobago reaffirms support to self-determination of Sahrawi people

New  York, October 8, 2016 (SPS) -  The  Permanent  Representative  of the  Republic  of  Trinidad  and  Tobago to  the   United  Nations  Her  Excellency  Penelope  Beckles has reaffirmed support to self-determination of Sahrawi people at the UN Special Political and Decolonization Committee. 
“Trinidad   and   Tobago   maintains   its   longstanding support for  the self-determination  of  the  people  of  Western  Sahara.  We  commend  the  efforts  being undertaken  by  the  Personal  Envoy  of  the  Secretary-General,  and  the  activities  of the  United  Nations  Mission  for  the  Referendum  in  Western  Sahara  (MINURSO).”
“Trinidad  and  Tobago  also  supports  the  call  in  Security  Council  resolution  2285 (2016)  for  the  continuation  of  negotiations  under  the  auspices  of  the  United Nations  without  preconditions  and  in  good  faith,  which  will  provide  for  the  self-determination  of  the  people  of  Western  Sahara  in  the  context  of  arrangements consistent  with  the  principles  and  purposes  of  the  Charter  of  the  United  Nations.”
“Trinidad  and  Tobago  wishes  to  encourage  the  parties  to  continue  negotiating  in  a spirit  of  compromise  and  sincere  commitment  with  the  objective  to  achieving  a just,  lasting  and  mutually  accepted  political  solution,” added Permanent  Representative  of the  Republic  of  Trinidad  and  Tobago to  the   United  Nations.
