Rabat new measures against MINURSO, "unprecedented"

Submitted on

Washington , March 18, 2016 (SPS) - The measures decided by Morocco against the United Nations Mission for Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) are "unprecedented" and will affect its ability to implement its mandates, denounced Thursday the UN.

"The mandate (of MINURSO) was given to it by the Security Council (...) what we are seeing is unprecedented," said UN Secretary General's spokesman Stephane Dujarric, during a press briefing.

Dujarric said that "the Permanent Mission of Morocco to the UN (on Thursday) transmitted to the Secretariat a list of 84 international civilian members of MINURSO who should leave the Kingdom of Morocco within three days."

In a failed attempt to make Ban Ki-moon change his position on the Western Sahara conflict, Morocco announced, on Tuesday, its decision to impose drastic cut in staff at the UN mission and to immediately stop its financial contribution to it.SPS
